WA vs NSW - Friday, September 26, 2008 7:40pm - Field: SHC Pitch 2

Word of the day was ‘Enthusiasm’.
Our first chance to play together, after the many changes to the team and the difficulty of getting together for training.
We took some time to steady. NSW scored first. We answered with a goal off a short corner. Our ‘6-1 variation’ has the ball going to Maris standing beyond the circle, and then hit back to Jilly on the post where she ‘casually’ deflected into the goal.
The second goal was the result of a solo run by Janese from the right to left, over the 25, and then hit the ball into the circle where Jill dived for the ball and deflected it into the back of the net.
Although NSW did score another 2, we didn’t feel over run at any stage.

Goal Scorers: Jill Sheehan 2 (PC - 35m, FG - 54m)

Result: WA 2 - NSW 3

WA vs ACT - Saturday, September 27, 2008 6:00pm - Field: SHC Pitch 1

Second day of competition took some minutes to settle at the start of the game. We were dominant in each area of the field for most of the first half.
Despite several short corner and field goal opportunities, we were unable to convert. In the latter half of the first half ACT scored a field goal.
After a team re-group at half time we came out more cohesive and determined.
Our first goal came off a feed from the right into the circle and put away by Dale Keiley.
Two minutes from full time, a build up from our back line, down the right, across to the top of the circle and hit into goal by Gail Anderson.
ACT were dogged throughout. Encouraged by the win we move on to face the Vics.

After two night games, the first game in the heat saw WA 50s meet the undefeated Victorian side. WA were into attack immediately and then were awarded a penalty corner.
A great pass from Janese McDougall to Jill Sheehan saw Jill deflect the ball into the goals.
Dale Keiley, Lyn Tapper were working hard, with Ricky Whelan and Roz Gould moving around up forward, Sue Gallinagh capitalized with WA’s second goal, followed quickly by another from Ricky.
Meg Prentice was working hard on the left and this hard work resulted in another great goal from Jill Sheehan, 4 nil at half time.
Victoria came out fighting in the second half, but were constantly repelled by Maris Margetts, Lesley Mather and Vicki Silich at the back, they were well supported by Kaye McGlew and Deb Andrews on the flank halves, and Gail Anderson and Janese in the midfield.
The forwards then gained control of the goal area and Jill slotted in another two fantastic goals.
Roz Gould then put the finishing touches to the 7th goal for WA.

WA vs NT - Monday, September 29, 2008 11:50am - Field: SHC Pitch 1

37 degree heat.
WA played NT in very hot and humid conditions. We had most of the attack and many short corners, with only one defensive corner for NT.
Lorna made only one save and did it well!
In the first half Jill Sheehan scored from a corner. She took the hit-out went to Janese, who executed a hard hit to the left post. Jill got her stick on it and converted.
The second goal was from a field play to the circle with a lay-off to Gail Anderson, who finished off with a most graceful goal (although Roz was there to help the ball on its way, if needed).
Lots of rehydration was needed at half time.
In the second half a third goal was scored quite quickly. This was from a short corner which was hit out by Sue Gallinagh from the opposite side.
The hit went to Maris Margetts who hit a straight hard ball to the left post. Jill then converted with a classy deflection which gave her a second goal.
The fourth and final goal involved a break away run down the right. Sue Gallinagh gave the ball to Deb Andrews who passed back to Sue who ran the base line, delivering the ball to Gail on the spot who finished off the play with an excellent goal.
From then the play slowed considerably as the heat took its toll. A result such as this is always the combination of great team work.

Penalty Corners: For 13 Against 1

Goal Scorers: Gail Anderson 2 - FG (26m), PC (29m) (Roz Gould has been awarded the goal 26m)

An early morning start saw WA play Queensland in humid but cooler conditions.
WA’s cohesiveness was obvious as they went into attack and a powerful hit by Dale into the circle saw Jill deflect the ball towards goal, but it narrowly missed.
Queensland counter attacked but were well covered by Maris and Lesley in defence. Play was between the two 25s with Ricky having a golden opportunity, but unfortunately the goalie saved the day for Queensland.
The second half was a continuation of the first with the midfielders working doggedly to keep the ball in WA control.
A breakaway by Queensland saw a sensational save by Lorna in goals.

The nil all result clinched second position on the ladder with 15 goals for and 4 scored against us.
