WA Over 55's - 2006 News

Day 1

Here we are in tropical Darwin, luxing it up at the Cullen Bay Apartments with a fantastic view of Fanny Bay and the marina.
We tried on our uniforms with varying results.
Alene liked her full-length socks and is planning on buying a suspender belt to go with them.
Lyn needs to take up her sleeves and some of the others are a little worried about the skirts.

Our first morning found us walking around the Cullen Bay area and having a morning run at the Darwin Cricket Club. Well, some of us ran. Rosa took a nap on a bench.
Our first training session is tonight.

Thursday 27 July

Well, we certainly had enough rest days, the Ole 55s! Thursday was yet another Rest Day and a crowd of us went out to Kakadu by air, organized by Tall Fee’s daughter Victoria, who is a pilot.
One Ole 55 who will remain nameless, now holds the honour of using the highest number of those little paper bags EVER!
Others went to Lichfield National Park, spent the day shopping or just stayed around the hotel and enjoyed the pool.

Thursday night was the WA get together around the pool, a wonderful bbq with salads and desserts provided by all teams.
This was followed by the traditional skits from each team.
All teams performed creditably, although the 45s were a bit slack.
However, the two skits by the Ole 55s were certainly the best of the night – not that we’re biased!
First up was a hilarious rendition of “Ahab the Arab”. With a collection of suitably attired harem dancers (Vicki, Karen and Lyn) singing and swaying in the background, Betty was a dashing Ahab, and Jane and Lyn C a mind boggling Clyde the Camel. Alene took off her goalie gear and donned her harem outfit as Fatima and Kerry was the Sultan with a surprise on his finger (don’t ask!).
But the Piece de Resistance was a fantastic version of “My Boomerang Won’t Come Back”.
Sandra and Avis were the chiefs, Vicki the witchdoctor and Rosa the Flying Doctor.
An Oscar goes to Margie for her performance as “your son Mack” whose boomerang wouldn’t come back.
It will be years before anything tops this one!

Sunday 30th July

A big team breakfast at Buzz Café on the waterfront of the marina finished off our Darwin trip and we headed towards the airport at 1pm, ready to go back to our friends and loved ones and leave the lovely tropical heat of Darwin.

To our coach Sanda and our Manager Glenys, many thanks from the Ole 55s.
A special hello to Pat Ellis, who sat on the Tech Bench and was given a certificate of appreciation from Hockey NT for her hard work and dedication throughout the tournament.
And to all the Ole 55s, well done girls! A great championship!

Next year, watch out for the Ole 55s in Sydney!
